The Sanssoucci in Potsdam

The Sanssoucci is a relatively modest palace located in Potsdam, which served at a retreat house for Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.  Completed in 1747, the Sanssoucci is often compared with the Versailles.  It is built in the Rococo style, which is supposed to reflect its nature as a retreat house for Prussia’s royal family.  “Sanssoucci” means “carefree” in French.

The New Palace

The New Palace is another residence built by Frederick the Great in Potsdam.  It was built in commemoration of the end of the Seven Years’ War.  Though it is much grander than the Sanssoucci, with 200 rooms and built in the Baroque style, it was meant to serve as a guesthouse for royal visitors rather than as a principal residence.
